Founded in Marktredwitz, UpperFranconia, by Fritz Thomas in 1903,Rosenthal acquired the “F. Thomas,Marktredwitz porcelain factory” in1908. In 1960 porcelain manufacturingwas relocated from the factory inMarktredwitz to the newly-built Thomasam Kulm Factory in Speichersdorf,Upper Franconia, the façade of whichhad been decorated with geometricalpatterns by Italian architect, MarcelloMorandini. Since the 1950s, Thomashas been consistently expanded as abrand for young, design-oriented anduncomplicated everyday tableware.Right into the 1980s, the Thomascollections were primarily influencedby Scandinavian design and its Scandicrange, for example, was awardedthe Faenza Gold Medal. At the end ofthe 1980s, Thomas took off in newdesign directions, this time predominantlyinfluenced by the UK. The firstcookshops replaced the elegantly settable. During this period, the Trendservice from the Lord Queensberry/Hunt design school was just one linethat became a big sales success. Inthe 1990s, the Thomas brand wascharacterised by new, functional andsimple design which now, in the 21stcentury, continues to be implementedwith innovative and modern concepts.
